Don't Let Loneliness Win: How to Be Happy Alone

It's essential to find ways in your day-to-day life that allows you to connect with other people. Whether it's through volunteering, joining an online forum, or going for walks with a dog - these simple things can make you feel like you're not so alone after all.

Relax, enjoy your own company

One of the best ways to combat loneliness is by figuring out what you like and doing it more often. Turn off your phone for a few hours to take a break from social media. Figure out your interests, and then find people who share them. 

Being constantly on our phones can make us feel worse about ourselves and make connecting with people in person harder. Disconnecting can help us figure out what's happening in our lives and provide some much-needed perspective.

Enjoy yourself in solitude

  1. Create a relaxing activity for yourself. Do something creative like painting or drawing, or do something physical like yoga or running. It doesn't matter what it is as long as it makes you feel good and relaxes your mind and body! 
  2. Cook a nice meal for yourself and eat it at home while reading a book or watching TV. 
  3. Go out and explore different parts of town. You'll find new stores or restaurants that give you an idea for a new hobby. 
  4. Treat yourself by indulging in your favorite dessert or buy a new shirt from your favorite store. 
  5. Try doing activities that don't involve other people, like going fishing or learning to knit. 
  6. Spend time with animals. Animals are great companions because they don't need anything from us other than food and love- which can be hard to come by sometimes when we're lonely!

Appreciate who you are

To be happy alone, you have to first stop comparing yourself. You are not a better or worse person because of your relationship status. 

And instead of focusing on other people's love lives and thinking about how you don't have that, consider all the different things you can do without the baggage of a relationship. You are allowed time for yourself and with friends without anyone else having a say. 

You don't have to feel guilty about being happy with yourself either - in fact, happiness is something that everyone deserves no matter what.
